Case No. 1 - Keshab Thapa

Mr. Keshab Thapa, 46 years old male patient had gone 10 operations on his right lower extremity after sustaining injuries in the road traffic accident almost 29 months ago. He had multiple injuries in his left lower extremity with fracture shaft of femur, segmental tibia fracture with soft tissue injuries. It is learnt that he has spent with the help of well wishers almost 4 lacs rupees (equivalent to 5000 USD). However, femur united in varus deformity and tibia ended in infective nonunion with shortening. He was extremely in miserable condition and that required attention. He was so poor and the smell of wound was causing extreme odour in the surrounding making him quite humiliated. He was ready for even amputation. The chairy fund of the department has been used to help this gentleman and surgery was undertaken with the resection of avascular bone ends, bone grafting and stabilization with Ilizarov’s circular fixator. The provision of limblengthening is also made in the frame for possible future lengthening. However, union will be the first priority. After successful surgery, patient has been mobilized with the shoe lift and a pair of crutches. Patient’s consent has been taken for the presentation of himself in the web.
